Consumers Association Chandigarh Demands Crackdown on Illegal LPG Refilling and Black Marketing in Chandigarh

Chandigarh, May 26, 2026:

The Consumers Association Chandigarh has expressed serious concern over the alleged illegal refilling and black marketing of LPG cylinders in various parts of Chandigarh and adjoining areas, following a recent fire incident reported in a shop in Sector 45, Chandigarh.

In a detailed representation addressed to the Adviser to the Administrator, Home Secretary, Deputy Commissioner, Director General of Police, Senior Superintendent of Police, Chief Fire Officer, Food & Civil Supplies Departments of Punjab and Haryana, Oil Companies and other concerned authorities, the Association has demanded immediate investigation and strict action against the persons involved in the dangerous and unlawful trade.

The Association stated that the fire incident allegedly occurred due to illegal refilling of LPG cylinders and has exposed a serious threat to public safety. According to information received by the Association, small LPG cylinders are allegedly being illegally refilled from larger domestic cylinders and thereafter sold at inflated prices to street vendors and hawkers dealing in food items such as kulcha-chana, tea stalls, fast food and other eatables in markets, near schools, rehri markets and public places across Chandigarh.

The Association further alleged that some crockery and household utensil (bartan) shops, particularly in Burail Market and similar areas, may be involved in this illegal activity.

The Consumers Association Chandigarh has urged the authorities to launch a joint enforcement drive involving the Food & Supplies Department, Legal Metrology Department, Oil Companies, Chandigarh Police and Fire Department. The Association suggested that vendors using such cylinders should be questioned to identify the source of illegal refilling and supply so that the entire network involved in the black-marketing racket can be exposed.

The Association has demanded:

• Immediate inspections and raids in suspected markets and colonies.

• Verification of illegal LPG refilling and supply chains.

• Identification of persons and establishments involved in illegal storage and transportation.

• Strict legal and penal action against offenders.

• Regular monitoring of LPG distribution and commercial misuse of domestic cylinders.

The Association warned that if timely and strict action is not taken, such hazardous activities may result in a major tragedy causing loss of valuable lives and property in Chandigarh.

Mr. N.K. Jhingan, Secretary General, Consumers Association Chandigarh, appealed to the public to report any suspicious LPG refilling activity to the concerned authorities in the interest of public safety.
