Aggarwal DAV Model School, Sector 7-B, Chandigarh, celebrated its annual Jamun Day with great enthusiasm to create awareness among students about the environmental, medicinal, nutritional and ecological importance of the Jamun tree (Syzygium cumini) and its fruit.
The programme commenced with a warm welcome by Ms. Jyotika Ahuja, Principal, who appreciated the Environment Society of India for organizing Jamun Day every year for more than three decades. She highlighted the nutritional and therapeutic value of the indigenous fruit and encouraged students to adopt eco-friendly practices and actively participate in tree plantation and environmental conservation.
Addressing the gathering, Mr. N. K. Jhingan, Secretary, The Environment Society of India, Chandigarh and Secretary (Environment) Bhartiya Ekta Manch, delivered an interactive and informative talk on the multiple benefits of the Jamun tree. He explained the medicinal value of its fruits, leaves, bark, roots and wood, and emphasized that Jamun is one of the most nutritious indigenous fruits, particularly beneficial for people suffering from diabetes and other lifestyle-related ailments.
Mr. Jhingan informed the students that more than 95% of Jamun fruits are wasted after falling from the trees during the fruiting season. He suggested that protective nets should be tied beneath fruit-bearing trees to collect the fruits safely and prevent wastage. He appealed to students to plant more Jamun trees and preserve this valuable native species for future generations.
He further stated that The Environment Society of India is perhaps the only organization in the country that has been celebrating “Jamun Day” continuously for over 30 years, intending to popularize this highly nutritious fruit and promote biodiversity conservation.
The cultural programme added colour to the celebration as students presented thought-provoking speeches and beautiful poems highlighting the health benefits, nutritional value and ecological importance of the Jamun tree. The performances were highly appreciated by the audience. Students who actively participated included Mayra (Class III), Sargun, Manan, Radha, Dhaani, Ashneer and Anaya (Class VI), who confidently recited poems and shared valuable information on the benefits of Jamun.
