Environment Society of India and Ror Mahasabha Organise Tree Plantation Drive at Ror Bhawan, Panchkula
A tree plantation drive was organised today near Ror Bhawan, Sector 4, MDC, Panchkula, jointly by the Environment Society of India (ESI), Chandigarh, and the Ror Mahasabha, Karnal.
Mrs. Paramjeet Kaur, Municipal Councillor, Ward No. 1, Panchkula, was the Chief Guest, while Mr. Narinder Singh Lobana was the Guest of Honour.
More than 30 saplings were planted in and around Ror Bhawan during the drive. A special plantation was also undertaken to mark the birthday of Master Mayank. Mayank, along with his mother, planted Amla saplings and pledged to adopt and take proper care of the saplings planted on the occasion of his birthday until they grow fully.
Speaking on the occasion, Mrs. Paramjeet Kaur assured the participants that she would undertake further plantation in her ward during the coming days and encourage residents to actively participate in making Panchkula greener.
N.K. Jhingan, Secretary, Environment Society of India, Chandigarh, apprised the gathering that the Society was founded in 1976 and has planted more than 50,000 trees and saplings in and around the Tricity over the years. He emphasised that the Society is now equally focused on the protection and preservation of trees already planted.
Mr. Jhingan drew the attention of the Chief Guest towards the practice of fixing nails, boards, hoardings and decorative lights on trees, particularly by shopkeepers, which causes serious damage to trees. He appealed to the Municipal Councillor to initiate a campaign for the removal of such boards, nails and other fixtures from trees in order to protect them and maintain the greenery of Panchkula.
He further stated that more locations would be identified in the near future where plantation is required. Besides planting saplings, saplings were also distributed among the participants with an appeal to plant them at suitable locations and ensure their proper care and protection.
Members of the Ror Mahasabha, Karnal, led by Adv. Ram Chander, Krishan Ji and others, and members of the Environment Society of India, including N.K. Jhingan, Secretary; Er. Ashok Bansal; K.L. Sachdeva; Rakesh Verma; and Mrs. Annapurna Sagwan, participated in the plantation drive.
Earlier in the morning, N.K. Jhingan also participated in an Environment Rally organised by the Chandigarh Senior Citizens Association at Sukhna Lake. During the rally, he appealed to the participants to enrol themselves and their friends for the collection of dry waste from households.
He informed the participants that the Environment Society of India is promoting a system under which dry waste will be collected from households on fixed days. The collected recyclable material will be purchased at a rate of approximately ₹4 per kg, thereby helping residents earn from their waste while contributing towards keeping Chandigarh clean and reducing plastic waste.
The organisers appealed to citizens to plant trees, adopt them and ensure their survival rather than limiting plantation drives merely to planting saplings. The message of the drive was clear: “Plant a Tree, Adopt a Tree and Protect a Tree.”
