Subject: Use of Whiskey in Naturopathy – A Cautious Perspective : Dr Ravinder Popli (NDDY)

Chandigarh/ 6.2.2026 : In naturopathy, health is maintained through natural balance, moderation, and respect for the body’s innate healing power. Alcoholic beverages, including whiskey, are not considered therapeutic substances; however, classical naturopathic and traditional health systems acknowledge that very small quantities, used occasionally and judiciously, may have certain physiological effects in selected individuals.

Whiskey, being a fermented and distilled product derived primarily from grains such as barley and aged in oak barrels, possesses a warming and drying nature. In individuals with cold constitution, sluggish digestion, or Kapha predominance, a minimal quantity (approximately 10–15 ml, taken occasionally and only after meals) may stimulate digestive secretions, improve appetite, and support peripheral blood circulation. Its warming effect may also provide temporary relaxation of the nervous system in stress-related tension.

It is emphasized that these effects are supportive and temporary, not curative. Excess or regular consumption is known to disturb the natural balance of the body and may adversely affect the liver, digestive system, nervous system, blood pressure, and metabolic health.

Whiskey is strictly contraindicated in individuals suffering from hypertension, heart disease, liver disorders, diabetes, gastric ulcers, acidity, pregnancy, or Pitta-dominant conditions. For such individuals, natural alternatives like herbal teas, dietary regulation, hydrotherapy, yoga, and lifestyle correction are strongly preferred.

Conclusion:

From a naturopathic standpoint, whiskey should never be prescribed as medicine. If consumed, it must be in very small quantity, infrequently, and only in suitable constitutions, with full awareness of its potential risks. True healing in naturopathy lies in natural food, clean water, disciplined lifestyle, and harmony with nature.
