The Environment Society of India (ESI), Chandigarh, in association with CloudEQ, an IT company, and the Forests and Wildlife Department, U.T. Chandigarh, organised a tree plantation drive at Colony No. 4, Industrial Area, Phase-I, Chandigarh.
A large number of employees of CloudEQ, officials of the Forests and Wildlife Department, and members of the Environment Society of India participated enthusiastically in the drive.
Dr. R.C. Mishra, IPS (Retd.), Chairman, Haryana State Police Complaint Authority, Chandigarh, and President, Environment Society of India, Chandigarh, a renowned environmentalist, was the Chief Guest on the occasion.
More than 25 saplings were planted at Colony No. 4. In addition, 10 moringa saplings, along with various medicinal and herbal plants, were planted at the Godrej Eternia building in Industrial Area, Phase-I, Chandigarh. The CloudEQ team pledged to adopt and take care of the plants until they become established.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. R.C. Mishra said that there is a dire need for plantation in and around Chandigarh. Since very little space is available in the city, he stressed that people should not only plant new trees but also ensure the protection and survival of trees that have already been planted.
He further appealed to citizens to remain vigilant against the unnecessary cutting of trees in the name of pruning and to raise their voice whenever trees are damaged or illegally cut.
N.K. Jhingan, Secretary, The Environment Society of India, Chandigarh, apprised the gathering that the Society was founded in 1976 and has planted more than 50,000 trees and saplings in and around the Tricity over the years. He emphasised that the Society is now equally committed to the protection and preservation of existing trees.
Mr. Jhingan said that ESI would also explore working with CloudEQ in other areas of environmental protection, particularly towards making the city cleaner and plastic-free.
He further stated that more locations requiring plantation would be identified in the near future. Besides planting saplings, several saplings were distributed among participants with an appeal to plant them at suitable locations and ensure their proper care and protection.
Ms. Simran and Mr. Sukhbir Singh, employees of CloudEQ, along with their team, took keen interest in the plantation drive and pledged to nurture the herbal and medicinal plants planted around the Godrej Eternia building. Sh. Jatinder Singh, Block Forest Officer, and Sh. Amarinder Singh, Forest Guard Forests & Wildlife Department guided participants on how to plant the saplings and help them survive.
Members of the Environment Society of India who participated in the drive included N.K. Jhingan, Secretary; Er. Ashok Bansal; R.K. Sharma; Ms. Chandni Sharma; Dr. Ravinder Nath; Ms. Anuradha Vashishtha; Rakesh Vashisht; Anjali Sharma; and D.V. Bangia, among others.
Ms. Chandni Sharma, Ms. Anjali Kapoor and Ms. Anuradha Kapoor also participated in the plantation activity and planted several Tulsi saplings.
The organisers appealed to citizens to plant trees, adopt them and, most importantly, ensure their survival instead of limiting plantation drives merely to the planting of saplings.
The message of the drive was clear: “PLANT A TREE, ADOPT A TREE AND PROTECT A TREE.”
